Let’s be honest here. The reason we buy these Magpul trigger guards is because they look cool. We tell ourselves it’s because we need more room in the trigger area for gloved hands in EXTREME TACTICOOL WINTER OPERATIONS but really, we don’t need these things at all. We buy them because they make our rifles look cool. And there’s nothing wrong with that!
Magpul makes two of these; a metal one and a plastic one for half the price. This is the plastic one. There are two ways that these trigger guards make your gun look cool:
1. the exterior curvature matches the angle on the magazine well and flows nicely into the grip
2. The interior curvature matches the curvature of the trigger guard area
The more-expensive metal one does both of these things perfectly. This one does #1 perfectly but #2 only reasonably well. When you look at your gun from the side with one of these on it, you’ll notice that the interior curvature is a bit shallow in some places, such that the trigger guard area’s interior has two slight “bulges” near the attachment points. Is this a big deal? Not in your life. But because the only reason to buy these is coolness, I have to admit that the plastic MOE is a little bit less cool-looking than the metal one. I’m sure this is intentional, too. Positive. Magpul knows why people buys these and they are a bunch of clever, clever people for segmenting their product line in this way.
Knowing this, I would probably go with the metal one in the future. Again, there’s nothing *wrong* with the MOE, it’s just a bit less cool.
Finally, when buying black rifle stuff, it becomes easy to forget about the cost of all these accessories. For the price of 6 or 7 of these trigger guards, you can buy a completely functional Mosin-Nagant rifle. Just a thought.
